Lufthansa cabin crew may start warning strikes

Sun Jan 18, 2009 8:47am EST
FRANKFURT, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Lufthansa [LHAG.DE] flight attendants could stage warning strikes in the next few days and weeks over a pay dispute, the Independent Flight Attendant Organisation (UFO) union told Reuters on Sunday.
UFO broke off a third unsuccessful round of negotiations on Friday. The union is calling for a wage and benefits rise of 15 percent for 12 months for around 16,000 employees at Lufthansa and other group airlines.
Lufthansa on Friday upped its offer to a rise of up to 10 percent from 9.1 percent. The package includes better work conditions and profit sharing.
The German airline called on UFO to return to the negotiating table and face up to "economic realities".
Passenger numbers have dwindled as the financial crisis has escalated, prompting Lufthansa in October to cut its 2008 operating profit goal to 1.1 billion euros ($1.46 billion) from a previous estimate of around the 2007 level of 1.38 billion.
A labour dispute would come at an inauspicious time for the carrier. In previous wage rounds, the announcement of warning strikes led to a decline in bookings. It was still unclear at the weekend to what extent and how Lufthansa was bracing for possible flight attendant action.
"Obviously, we always try to reduce the impact on passengers," a company spokeswoman said on Sunday. (Reporting by Angelika Gruber and Kathrin Schich; Writing by Sarah Marsh; editing by John Stonestreet)

Thumbs up Lufthansa cancels 44 flights due to strike

Lufthansa cancels 44 flights due to strike

* Reuters, Friday January 23 2009

* Strike at main hub lasts 3 hours
* Trade union UFO eyes further strikes
* Stock down 3.1 percent, underperforming DAX
(Adds total flights cancelled due to strike, union comment)
FRANKFURT, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Germany's Deutsche Lufthansa had to cancel 44 flights on Friday after trade union UFO called on flight attendants to stage a warning strike.
Several hundred passengers who had booked seats on domestic and European flights were affected by the cancellations and some delays, a spokeswoman for Lufthansa said.
Shares of Lufthansa were 3.1 percent lower at 9.435 euros at 1036 GMT, more than two hours after the strike ended, while the German blue-chip DAX index was down 2.3 percent.
UFO is pushing for better wages for cabin crew members and could call for further warning strikes in the near future, its head negotiator Joachim Mueller said.
Earlier this month, a third round of wage talks for 16,000 flight attendants failed. The union is calling for a wage and benefits rise of 15 percent.
Lufthansa has increased its offer to a rise of up to 10 percent, from 9.1 percent. The package includes better work conditions and profit sharing.
The German airline called on UFO at the time to return to the negotiating table and face up to "economic realities".
Last July, Lufthansa's passenger numbers were hurt as strikes by ground staff and cabin crew as well as walkouts by regional pilots forced the carrier to cut flights.
The wage agreement that ended that walkout adds about 100 million euros ($130 million) to costs every year, the company has said.
In addition, airlines have been hard hit by the escalating financial crisis, with passenger numbers dwindling. Lufthansa in October cut its 2008 operating profit goal to 1.1 billion euros, from a previous estimate of about 1.38 billion. Default Lufthansa to resume cabin crew wage talks on Monday

Lufthansa to resume cabin crew wage talks on Monday
Wed Feb 4, 2009 12:00pm EST

FRANKFURT, Feb 4 (Reuters) - Deutsche Lufthansa (LHAG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) will start another round of wage talks with trade union UFO on Monday, a statement on the union's website showed on Wednesday, as the airline seeks to avoid further crippling protests.

Airlines and their pilots, grounds crews and cabin crews are at loggerheads around the world, hitting carriers including Air France-KLM (AIRF.PA: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Air Canada (ACa.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Finnair Oyj (FIA1S.HE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) as airlines try to safeguard already slim margins.

Lufthansa cabin crews represented by UFO have staged protests twice in the past two weeks, forcing the German flagship carrier to cancel dozens of flights and cope with delays.

"It remains to be seen whether a sustainable solution can be found," the union said in the statement on Wednesday. Otherwise, further warning strikes were possible anytime, it said.

Last month, a third round of wage talks for 16,000 flight attendants failed. The union is calling for a wage and benefits rise of 15 percent.

Lufthansa officials say it has increased its offer to a rise of up to 10 percent, from an earlier 9.1 percent. The package includes better work conditions and profit sharing.

Lufthansa on Tuesday was the second European airline in as many days to raise its full-year 2008 outlook, saying its fourth quarter had yielded stronger results than expected aided by lower fuel costs. [ID:nL3735308]

Four days earlier, the carrier had said it would shorten the working hours of 2,600 workers in its cargo division to offset weak demand for air freight services.

Last July, Lufthansa's passenger numbers were hurt by strikes by ground staff and cabin crew as well as walkouts by regional pilots forced the carrier to cut flights.

The wage agreement that ended that walkout adds about 100 million euros ($130 million) to costs every year, the company has said. (Reporting by Maria Sheahan; editing by Patrick Graham)

Talks between British Airways and union break down, strike to begin at midnight Friday

The prospect of travel chaos in Britain in the run-up to the Easter break also intensified with news that railway signal workers voted in favour of a strike, joining rail maintenance workers. The Rail Maritime and Transport union has not called dates for a walkout of both groups of workers but has refused to rule out the Easter long weekend.
